The year is 2009. An Angeleno and a Jersey Girl meet in Southern Arizona while teaching their way through MFAs in creative writing. Career-obsessed investment bankers, we are not…

Seven years later we’re married, and looking to balance our jobs (Joel as college lecturer, Alison as therapist) with new writing projects and a mutual love of backpacking and nature.

2016 was also the year we began to get serious about financial independence and even the remote possibility of early retirement.

So we’re just your average desert rats in our early thirties, looking to reach FIRE* in 2030, which we’ve dubbed the Year of the Cactus.

Along the way, we’re hoping to share everything we can about sustainable living (not just for desert dwellers!), higher education, mental health, starting a family, travel hacking, home ownership, rental properties, and more.

We’re no experts, so if chronicling our successes and failures can help you become more cactified, too, then that will make this blog worthwhile.

Happy reading,

J & A
